Numeral Sales Tax

We’ve had a great experience working with Numeral. The team has been responsive, knowledgeable, and helpful in navigating sales tax compliance across multiple states. Taylor in particular has been great to work with — always responsive and willing to help us work through questions and issues as they come up. We really appreciate the support and look forward to continuing the partnership.

We file in +20 states and moved from Avalara for cost reasons about 4 months ago. Onboarding was pretty good experience with a couple exceptions. A couple states were missed, so recommend closely double checking setups. When I detected omission, I got routed to another support person who fixed everything. My support experience and user interface is better than Avalara. Not having an annual contract and paying up front was also a deciding factor.

Numeral has been great and has been a solid upgrade from our last sales tax software. Thing are much more automated, and Numeral takes true responsibility for our company's sales tax filings. They resolve all issues for us and acknowledge when they make a mistake. They even pay any penalties and interest that may be incurred due to a mistake they made(which is not often, but it is nice that they do this on the rare occasion). Customer service has been great, especially from Taylor. Additionally onboarding was relatively simple. The only reason they are not getting 5 stars is due their reporting, which could be better. That said, I informed them of this and they are actively improving their reporting.

The Numeral team has done a good job of onboarding our account after transitioning from Avalara. As with other commenters, filing with the various states is not an easy task. Do not expect perfection; there are always a few issues. But the customer service team has been faster and faster with their responses. The overall Numeral team has been efficient in filing all of my required returns. I would say that the platform is still evolving and has a way to go with respect to reporting; the available reports are pretty basic which is why I'm giving them a 4 instead of a 5.

Taylor helped my company navigate and register for the new California Covered Battery‑Embedded (CBE) Waste Recycling Fee. This was not a service Numeral was currently providing, but Taylor worked with his internal team to make it happen. He was responsive and kept me posted throughout the process. We are very grateful for Taylor's help and support and that Numeral can take this task off our plate!

Numeral streamlines the daunting process that is sales tax. With filings in several states at a high volume, the ease of Numeral's approach takes a load off of our company. When notices arise, they let us know and handle on the back end until resolved.

Working with Numeral is a reasonable cost approach to getting your sales tax filings taken care of. We've been with them since their start-up days and they have been very responsive to our inquiries, especially Carlos. Matheus, William, Lara, Jenn, Taylor, Ben, to name a few, have helped us solve many issues, and they're all great to work with. We have no complaints regarding follow up. Numeral is, for us, by no means a hands-off service. We're responsible for all filings and that means spending time on approvals, checking up, and share any letters from tax authorities. So, it's still a bit time consuming. Numeral is a good alternative when you're trying to decide between hiring a full-time sales tax employee or paying a full-service company lots of money.

Sales tax is hard. People think its some simple process to automate, but in reality, there are a lot of required phone calls with states, issues that take a long time to resolve, and yeah, its just quite a mess in the US. Numeral does a pretty good job trying to tackle it, but they are not perfect. They are in our Slack so communication is fast, so thats great. Me recommendation: If you have a clean sales tax history and want to move to Numeral, you are in pretty good shape, go for it. If you have a long history of backfilling issues, I think its best to use a dedicated person. Its extremely time intensive to do back fillings and clean it up. Numeral did do it for me, but it required a ton of my time personally. No matter what you do, when switching to and new sales tax provider, you need to first make sure you personally can login to all the state portals, check if all the info like emails and addresses are correct, get all the passwords in a sheet, and hand it off to the provider in a clean way. Otherwise its going to be a horrible experience for everyone. Get organized! Sales tax is hard.

We started with Numeral in 2024 and have grown to really appreciate their service. They are quick to respond to questions and help resolve issues with States, etc. I am able to approve returns before processing and they provide copies of completed tax returns on the portal.
